TURN YOUR URN FESTIVE
DYI CHRISTMAS URN/PLANTER
‘Tis the time of year to decorate the home for the holidays. Whether it is Christmas, Hannakka, or Kwanzaa, having a statement at the front door is so important to express your festive side. These decorations can be a grand as you wish, or as simple as you want. Many will rely on store bought decorations that are WAY overpriced, but I have a simple and cost effective way to turn your summer planter or urn festive!
I have been doing my own decorations for a while now when it comes to the front door or window box planters. I am a firm believer in welcoming your guests full force in the holiday spirit. Nothing says love than the warmth of holiday with a homemade decoration you can proudly show off. It is fun, doesn’t take long, and find new fun ways to fill them each year. What I love most about this project is that many of the items I fill them with can be stored most of the year and reused the following year. Some of the items are free too! Adding simple outdoor battery powered timed lights to add a nice punch.
When filling a planter, there is 3 rules: a thriller, a filler, a spiller. The thriller is the item that stands out, the filler are items the fill the middle of the planter, and the spiller is the items than hangs over the planter. This 3 rule will even out the planter and fill every space needed for this project.
This is a more “watch the video” project than following steps written down. But these are the items I used and feel free to add, subtract, or change any of them to make it your own:
THRILLER
An urn or planter (use any of the ones you have at home for the summer plants, size does not matter)
Birch branches, or any white branches (can be reused if stored)
Curly willow branched or any brown branches that are not straight (can store and reuse)
Red twig dogwood branches (I love the red, can use yellow too. Can also store and reuse)
FILLER
Fraser or Canaan tree branches (can get for free where they sell trees, ask for the branches they cut from the bottom of the trees. They are usually in piles to be trashed)
Faux juniper branches or fresh. (I found these faux, but realistic ones at target as part of the hearth and hand collection. They are super real looking and they have other varieties you can use. These will be great to use year after year once purchased)
Battery powered outdoor timer lights (the stay on for 6 hours and off 18)
SPILLER
Fresh pine rope. (you will only need the small roll, 25 feet, and cut them in foot to 2 foot long sections so the wiring is still in place. They will drape over the planter and spill down the sides)
Make sure the urn or planter is filled with dirt as this will be your base. The thriller and fillers will go in the middle and the spiller will be the sides. The lights will weaves between the filler and thriller for a glow at the base of the planter.
