BRIGHTEN UP BIRCH LOGS

RIBBON WRAPPED BIRCH LOGS

When speaking of all holidays, Christmas is by far my favorite to decorate. Each year I try to do something different to brighten up our home and bring it one step closer to a Hallmark movie. Many of the decorations you buy are expensive or overpriced for what they are. I tend to be inspired to try things on my own when I see something in a store or a picture. This is one of those decor ideas I happened to see and then replicated myself.

I used the left over birch logs from my urn project and purchased a few larger logs to create this festive decoration. What I love about this project is that it’s not expensive to make, it requires four items, will take you less than 10 minutes to make, and can be on display through much of the winter season. Heck, you can even store it and reuse it the following year. This is perfect to brighten up your entry way, place inside a faux fireplace, on the hearth of a real fireplace, or as my son said “place it next to a gravestone to decorate it.”

I love the white color of the birch tree. This makes it the perfect canvas to add your classic green and red colors to the palette. This is all you will need:

  • 3 Birch Logs (or branches if thick enough)

  • Long Cable Tie (or multiple short ones)

  • Ribbon Of Choice (minimum of 2.5 inch thickness)

  • Real Or Artificial Garland

Stack the birch logs like a pyramid (triangle) and use the cable tie in the middle to fasten the logs together. Then cut the length of the ribbon long enough to wrap the logs over the cable tie to hide it. Leave the two ends draped over the logs after you tie the ribbon in a knot (you will use them to tie the bow you make in the next step.) Take another very long piece of ribbon and create four loops in the one strand of ribbon. You may need to work this a few times, but you want four loops and when you hold the ribbon in the middle, it should look like four leaf clover. Take that clover and place the middle of the knot you created with the other ribbon in the previous step. Then take the two ends and tie the clover to fasten the man made bow on the top of the log. You will then puff up the loops and “pretty up” the bow. You may need to cut the ends of the fastener to your desired lengthen. Make sure it looks like a beautiful bow. Finally, trim either real or fake garland and tuck then under the bow on each top side of the birch logs. In the end it will look like a perfectly wrapped birch log present ready to display in your home this season.
